The Best Locations for an Outdoor Couples Session

I often get asked about the best locations for couples and/or engagement sessions around the Wellington region. There is a plethora of options often within a 30 min drive at most. My favourites often have the best light an hour before sunset, however, if an early time is better there are several spots for which day photoshoots work best. Below are some of my favourites from my ever growing list!

CBD Rooftop

For an urban location that gets a cracker sunset, this rooftop spot is an all time favourite for me. Despite it’s location, it’s often private and peaceful and you can drive right up! Best 1 hour before sunset.

Breaker Bay

Dramatic rocky backgrounds and sea views, this spot is worth the trek down the beach. Best when barefoot, this spot is great anytime from midday onwards as the sun dips behind the hills and we can enjoy the shade for soft flattering light.

Whitirea Park

A local gem for those based in the northern suburbs, this spot is best 1 hour before sunset and features gorgeous long grass in the summer months. Just over the hill is the options to double down on locations with a beach and rocky terrain. It can be windy here, so hair up is recommended.

Truby King Park

History meets woodlands in this stunning location. The sun peeks through the trees an hour before sunset just behind the main park in this often isolated bike route. Best 1—2 hours before sunset.

Parliament Building

A Wellington icon for good reason, this location is great for couples wanting a recognisable location (or to even out a dramatic height difference!) Late afternoon is best here. Permission is required for this location but I can easily arrange this for you.

Kaitoke Regional Park

Perfect for the more adventures among us, this spot offers a range of locations from riverside, a swing bride or a bit of native bush. Best early to mid-afternoon before the sun disappears.

Miramar Hill

Views galore, there’s nothing like a sunset while you overlook the city. Best 1 hour before sunset and the added bonus of a bit of plane spotting. Often on the windy side, I recommend hair up for this one.
